About this publication

A Note From the Editors

A small desk, one question, and a preference for saying less with more care.

Where the essay is written: books, scores and a great deal of listening.

Scouttonicindexchoi is an independent publication produced by a small editorial team with backgrounds in performance, music theory and the psychology of listening. We began with a single question that kept surfacing in rehearsal rooms and lecture halls alike, why one note feels like home, and found that most available answers were either too brief to be useful or too technical to be read.

How we work

Each part of the essay is drafted from primary sources wherever possible: the treatises of Rameau and Helmholtz, published experimental studies, and recordings themselves. Every factual claim is checked by a second editor. Where scholars disagree, as they do over the Tristan chord or Bach's intended temperament, we report the disagreement rather than settle it by assertion.

Independence

We accept no sponsorship, affiliate fees or advertising from instrument makers, record labels, streaming services or teaching platforms. We are not affiliated with any university, orchestra or school. The publication is run by Scouttonicindexchoi Editions Ltd, registered in England and Wales.

Corrections

If you find an error, please tell us. We correct factual mistakes promptly and note significant changes at the foot of the relevant part. Disagreements of interpretation are welcome too; some of our best revisions began as a reader's letter.
